Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary marathon runner, is preparing for an unexpected return to competitive racing, but this time in a shorter 10-kilometer race, part of Thailand’s Bangkok Marathon.
This move comes after his dramatic withdrawal from the marathon at the Paris Olympics, where he left the course after allowing the final competitor, Ser-Od Bat-Ochir, to pass him at the 31-kilometer mark. Kipchoge’s departure from the course, as he gifted his shoes and socks to cheering fans, left many wondering about the future of his illustrious career.
Now, with an ambassadorial role for Thailand, Kipchoge aims to expand his impact on athletics in Asia. In his statement, he shared his enthusiasm for this new endeavor: “I have traveled frequently to Asia and share the great ambitions of growing athletics as a sport to make people happier and healthier.” He continued, “There is tremendous potential in Asian athletics, and I am pleased to work with Amazing Thailand to help promote it.”
This race marks Kipchoge’s first non-marathon competition since 2016 and adds a new chapter to his storied career. Just two months ago, his pursuit of a third Olympic marathon title came to a surprising close in Paris when he withdrew mid-race, ending his quest for yet another Olympic medal.
Formerly the world record holder from 2018 to 2023, Kipchoge has also secured two consecutive Olympic marathon golds, along with 5000-meter medals in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008). Between 2014 and 2019, he maintained an unmatched 10-race winning streak in major marathons, cementing his legendary status in long-distance running.
As Kipchoge sets his sights on expanding the global reach of running through his role in Thailand, his remarkable career trajectory continues to inspire runners and fans worldwide.
