5 Reasons why I’ve chosen to train at ‘Altitude 1’ in Bright, Victoria

By James Nipperess

1) Live High Train Low:

Australia’s highest peak is 2228m. We have each bedroom set to 3000m with the aim at improving our Hb Mass, whilst the altitude of Bright is 320m which means you can still train at a high sustained speed.

The Box Altitude App allows you to adjust the altitude setting from your phone

2) The weather:

You can see the snow on the mountains in the distance and when doing a session at Bright it’s clear where you would rather be running! The week we are here, the temperature throughout the day is 7-10degrees warmer in Bright than the surrounding mountains.

3) The town:

Bright has a population of approximately 2400. The ease of access to the major supermarkets, petrol, banks make the logistics of a training camp very easy. Sixpence coffee roastery is particularly high quality as is the ever-popular Bright Brewery.

4) Recreation:

‘Altitude 1’ is equipped with two Smart TV’s with Netflix (3.5 hours was well spent watching “The Irishman” starring DeNiro and Pacino amongst others). The accommodation is also equipped with boxing gym equipment which I love making a fool of myself with. Another sport I like to play but am horrible at is golf and lucky for my the 18 holes at Bright are nice and flat and no chances of hitting a water feature! Finally the Bright “Splash park” in the heart of town is always a favourite for a dip.

5) The running trails:

Last but not least… the countless options of trails! The town of Bright is surrounded by pine forests and these Logging roads make for some nice running. Snowy Creek road is a great option for a long out and back run, the Cherry Walk Nature trail follows the river- its flat and smooth under foot and great for sessions. Finally, If you want flat cycle-path: the Murray to mountains rail trail (Wangaratta to Bright) is approximately 85km.
