They’re not necessarily the sort of figures you’d like associated with your name, but Stewart McSweyn now boasts a pair of impressive performances at 3000 metres.

Seven minutes 30 seconds for 3000 metres represents 60 seconds per lap. Not many men have ever broken 7:30 for the distance. Even fewer have run that fast and lost.

Exclusive clubs then. McSweyn is assumedly happy to be in the first of the two. The other: not so much, perhaps. His 7:28.02 in Rome last year was an Australian and Oceania record, his 7:28.94 in Gateshead last Tuesday (13 July) sits at number two on the same national and area lists.
