Italian steeplechase athlete Ahmed Abdelwahed’s athletic career has been marred by a four-year ban imposed by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) and the rescinding of his silver medal from the 2022 European Athletics Championships due to a breach of anti-doping regulations.

The recent announcement by the AIU highlighted that Abdelwahed, who secured a silver medal in Munich last year, had provided a urine sample containing Meldonium, a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Despite Abdelwahed’s insistence on the inadvertent use of Meldonium, his provisional suspension in September 2022 was confirmed by the B sample, revealing the presence of the prohibited substance. Consequently, the AIU decided to nullify all of Abdelwahed’s accomplishments from the 2022 European Championships onward, resulting in the loss of titles, awards, medals, points, and any associated financial gains.

The AIU specified that Abdelwahed has a 30-day window to contest the decision by appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
