In a historic decision, Beijing, China, has been officially selected as the host city for the prestigious 2027 World Athletics Championships by the World Athletics Council. This significant announcement was made during the 234th World Athletics Council Meeting in Glasgow, conducted ahead of the World Athletics Indoor Championships scheduled from March 1 to 3.

The forthcoming 2027 World Athletics Championships, slated to take place 12 years after Beijing’s successful organization of athletics’ premier event and almost two decades following the Beijing Olympic Games, promises to bring together the world’s top athletic talents.

China’s continued prominence in global athletics is underscored by the privilege of hosting next year’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, further solidifying its status on the international stage.

Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, extended congratulations to Beijing, emphasizing the vast sports market in China. Coe pointed out China’s remarkable achievement as the leading performer for Wanda Diamond League broadcast consumption in 2023, presenting an unparalleled opportunity to grow the sport and its fan base in one of the world’s largest commercial markets.

“With the announcement of China as our next host, our last four World Athletics Championships have now been awarded to the world’s four largest economies: the USA (Oregon), the EU (Budapest), Japan (Tokyo), and China (Beijing),” added Coe.

Wang Nan, World Athletics Council Member and Vice President of the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA), expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment and trust bestowed upon China and Beijing. Wang Nan pledged collaborative efforts with the Beijing organizing committee to ensure the championships meet the highest quality standards, contributing significantly to the global development of athletics.
