Before her groundbreaking Olympic appearance, Valero had already secured her maiden world cross country title in Chepstow, Wales, where she triumphed over renowned competitors, including future Olympic champions Tatyana Kazankina of the Soviet Union and Italy’s Gabriella Dorio.
The subsequent year, in 1977, Valero further solidified her dominance by retaining her global crown in Dusseldorf. Her exceptional feat made her the first woman to claim three medals at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, adding to her previous bronze in Rabat in 1975.
Valero’s illustrious career boasted an impressive tally of 25 Spanish titles across various disciplines, including cross country, 800m, 1500m, and 3000m events.
