Beatrice Chebet, the world cross-country champion, and Berihu Aregawi, the silver medallist, demonstrated their supremacy at the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza, proving their elite position. Taking place in Elgoibar, Spain, on Sunday (7), the competitors showed remarkable expertise in navigating the difficult course due to the continuous rain. Chebet, fresh off her world record-setting performance in the 5km, took charge of the 7.62km women’s race from the outset. Leading a pack that included fellow Kenyan runners Edinah Jebitok and Grace Nawowuna, along with Ethiopia’s Asmarech Anley, Chebet set a relentless pace that left her competitors trailing. Despite the adverse conditions, she surged forward, ultimately claiming victory by breaking away in the final kilometers and securing her first win in Elgoibar.

Expressing contentment with her performance despite the challenging weather, Chebet shared her plans for the upcoming Eldoret race before focusing on defending her world cross-country title in Belgrade.

In the men’s 9.71km contest, Spanish athletes Adel Mechaal and Fernando Carro took an early lead, closely pursued by Aregawi and a strong field of contenders. Aregawi’s strategic maneuvering saw him take control mid-race, establishing a significant lead that he maintained until the finish line, crossing it comfortably in first place. Behind him, the battle for podium positions intensified, with Rodrigue Kwizera securing second place and Soufiane El Bakkali finishing a close third.

Aregawi, acknowledging the course’s toughness, admitted to a cautious start before asserting his dominance and securing victory. His sights are now set on the World Cross in Belgrade and the upcoming Olympic Games.
