Meanwhile, the women’s race witnessed a captivating showdown between Niyomukunzi and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti. Niyomukunzi, who dedicates much of her training time in Italy, displayed remarkable determination throughout the race. Battocletti initially led the pack, closely pursued by Niyomukunzi, until the latter made a decisive move in the closing kilometers, securing a well-deserved victory in 19:42, narrowly edging out Battocletti.
Expressing her heartfelt surprise at the win, Niyomukunzi lauded the competitiveness of the race and expressed gratitude for the support she received.
Niyomukunzi’s triumph at Campaccio adds to her impressive 2023 season, marked by significant improvements across various distances and a commendable top-ten finish at the World Road Running Championships in Riga.
