Why Obiri won’t compete in Tokyo

Obiri made her debut at the World Athletics Championships in 2011 in Daegu, South Korea in the 1500m and went on to compete in the 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 events, per World Athletics.

She won four medals in the global events, two golds, a silver and a bronze before switching to road events.

The 35-year-old said she won’t compete at the 2025 event to give other athletes the chance to carry the Kenyan flag.
