The ASICS Gel-Kayano series has long been the gold standard in stability running shoes. Version 30 marked a turning point shedding the traditional medial post in favour of a broader base and ASICS’ new 4D Guidance System. It was bold, maximal, and a far cry from the structured firmness of Kayanos past.

Now, version 32 continues that evolution with a softer midsole, cleaner transitions, and a sleeker upper refinements that elevate it from solid to exceptional. While visually familiar, the updates underfoot mark the smoothest and most runnable Kayano yet.

First Impressions

At first glance, the Kayano 32 looks every bit the classic. But pick it up, and you’ll notice the difference. The stretch-knit upper feels luxurious, the sculpted heel counter is wrapped in plush foam, and the underfoot feel is surprisingly soft for a stability shoe. At 300g (10.6 oz) for a men’s US 9, the weight is still there but the improved geometry makes it feel lighter in motion.

Upper & Fit

The engineered stretch-knit upper returns to a more dialed-in fit, providing excellent lockdown through the midfoot and heel. It’s a touch snug, particularly in the forefoot, but the material adapts well over time. The gusseted tongue has been reinforced along the arch for better structure and comfort, especially on longer runs. Plush heel padding counters a firm internal heel counter, providing a secure rearfoot hold without pressure points.

Those with narrow to standard-width feet will find a refined fit. Wider-footed runners may still prefer the wide version.

Midsole & Cushioning

FF BLAST™ PLUS foam makes its debut in the Kayano series, bringing a mid-range soft feel that’s noticeably more forgiving than previous versions. Combined with a PureGEL™ unit in the heel, it provides smoother impact absorption and better transitions.

The heel geometry is where this version shines. With its lateral bias and compressive design, the 8mm drop feels natural and efficient finally correcting the clunky rearfoot feel that plagued prior versions. The forefoot remains stiff but rockered, encouraging smooth toe-off without needing flexibility.

Ride & Performance

This is a daily trainer through and through designed for easy runs, steady long efforts, and high-mileage weeks. The midsole cushioning is soft without being mushy, and the transitions are the smoothest of any Kayano to date. While it’s not built for speed, it handles light strides better than you’d expect from a 300g shoe.

The outsole grips well on dry roads, with minor slippage reported on wet surfaces. After 30+ km of testing, some wear is visible on exposed midsole foam, but the rubber zones show strong durability.

How It Stacks Up Against Competitors

Shoe (Men’s US 9) Weight (g) Drop (mm) Stack Heights (Heel/Forefoot)
ASICS Gel-Kayano 32 300g 8mm 40mm / 32mm
Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 286g 12mm 36mm / 24mm
Saucony Tempus 269g 8mm 36.5mm / 28.5mm
Hoka Arahi 7 281g 5mm 34mm / 29mm

The Kayano 32 holds its own at the premium end of the stability market. It’s heavier than the Saucony Tempus or Hoka Arahi but makes up for it with a more refined upper, smoother heel geometry, and a far more premium finish.

Final Verdict

The ASICS Gel-Kayano 32 is the most polished Kayano ever made. Softer, smoother, and far better crafted, it retains everything the series is known for while fixing the ride issues of past versions. The $280 AUD price tag is steep—but what you’re getting is premium engineering, adaptive guidance, and a ride that finally lives up to the name.
