A rather comfortable victory in a personal best here for Kenyan-born Turk Ali Kaya over the world record holder, Zersenay Tadesse of Eritrea, missing the course record set by Evans Kiplagat last year by 3 seconds. Kaya –the former Stanley Kiprotich Mukche who won not only the European cross country and 3000m indoor titles last year, but also the U23 crowns over 5000m and 10,000m– has run only one previous half-marathon, on a short course in 2015.
Kaya was part of a pack that still numbered eight men at 15 km, including Tadesse and Leonard Komon, the world record holder over 10 km and 15 km, but he broke away in the 18th kliometer.
Defending champion Kiplagat was tenth this time, with Violah Jepchumba, who ran a world-leading 1:05:51 three weeks ago, taking the women’s race in 1:08:18. Time bonuses were available, but none of the athletes ran fast enough to earn them.
