Australian runner and YouTuber Matt Fox has been arrested in Japan after allegedly attempting to bring THC-infused edibles into the country — a serious offense under Japan’s zero-tolerance drug laws.
Fox — founder of the Sweat Elite podcast and YouTube channel — has openly discussed traveling with THC gummies, including in a February 25 episode of his podcast. In that episode, he acknowledged the risks, stating:
“I travel with THC gummies, and most countries don’t care, but Japan is different. They tend to search you every time.”
Japan enforces some of the strictest anti-drug laws in the world, and even small amounts of marijuana — including edibles — can lead to arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment.
This incident marks Fox’s second controversy in Japan. In 2023, he received a lifetime ban from the Ageo City Half Marathon after being caught running under another participant’s bib. Earlier this year, he also dropped out of the Osaka Marathon at the 22-kilometer mark.
The case is currently under investigation by Japanese authorities.
