Fresh off the plane from the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 23, Australia’s newest global medallists will join some of their international counterparts at Lakeside Stadium tomorrow (Monday, 20 February) ahead of the inaugural Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne. The Australian Mixed 4x2km Relay team, comprising of Commonwealth Games champion Olli Hoare, Tokyo Olympic finalists Jessica Hull and Stewart McSweyn as well as Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abbey Caldwell won Australia’s fourth ever medal at a World Athletics Cross Country Championships, and did so valiantly on home soil in Bathurst on Saturday afternoon.
The team have quickly reset, with their focus now solely on their individual events at the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne, Oceania’s first ever World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Level meet.
Joining them at Lakeside Stadium will be New Zealand’s Sam Tanner (Oceania 1500m champion) and world lead in the indoor mile, Heather MacLean from the USA, who both competed in Bathurst.
The Maurie Plant Meet is part of the Chemist Warehouse Australian Summer of Athletics and is supported by the Victorian Government and World Athletics. The Meet has attracted competitors from nations including Japan, United States, Canada, Ethiopia, Uganda, France, Great Britain, Ukraine and Malta, making it a truly international affair.
