Australia’s Peter Bol and Joseph Deng have gone 1-2 in 1:44.56 and 1:44.61 for 800m in Stockholm, a non-Diamond League event. Both runners were neck and neck down the home straight with Bol just edging out Deng in a photo finish. Both runners are on the cusp of breaking Ralph Doubell’s long standing Australian 800-metre record of 1:44.40. It has been four years since Alex Rowe tied the mark in Monaco.
Deng has been going from strength to strength this year since he smashed out a 1:45.71 in the “B” race at the Australian national championships and then clocked a 1:44.97 in Hengelo last week.
Both Bol and Deng have the potential to etch their names in the record books anytime they line up in an 800m race. It’s only a matter of time until one or both of these outstanding athletes push each other to heights never achieved by an Australian male 800m runner.
