Australia’s top sprinters continued their push toward sub-10 second history at the Australian Open and U20 Athletics Championships in Perth, with Lachlan Kennedy clocking a blistering 10.00 seconds to become the second fastest Australian ever in legal conditions, behind Patrick Johnson. Rival Rohan Browning ran 10.07, setting up a fiery showdown in the finals alongside defending champ Sebastian Sultana.
In the women’s 100m, Torrie Lewis and Bree Rizzo both ran 11.25 to lead the field into the semis. Olympian Tori West reclaimed the heptathlon title with 6107 points, while Angus Hincksman, Dayna Crees, Angie Ballard, Luke Bailey, and Rheed McCracken were standouts in para events — many securing spots for the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi.
Cara Feain-Ryan broke the championship record in the women’s steeplechase with a 9:29.19 run. Rising star Seth Kennedy clocked 46.62 to win the U20 men’s 400m. Meanwhile, Peter Bol, Peyton Craig, and Abbey Caldwell eased through to their 800m finals.
The Championships cap off the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series and are backed by the WA Government, Tourism WA, VenuesWest, and Athletics West.
