The race commenced before sunrise with a dazzling fireworks display at 5:00 am local time. Led by Kenyan pacer Dickson Chumba, the men’s elite pack embarked on an ambitious start, clocking a brisk 5-K in 15:17, hinting at a sub-2:09 finish. However, the challenging terrain and adverse weather significantly impeded faster times in this prestigious event, the fourth-largest marathon in the United States.

Paul Lonyangata, a seasoned marathoner who had previously secured the runner-up position in Honolulu in 2014, demonstrated his seasoned experience by strategically making his decisive move in the latter part of the race. Despite fierce competition from his counterparts, his calculated surge at the 18th mile propelled him to victory in 2:15:42, showcasing remarkable resilience after returning from a suspension. Behind him, Filmon Ande finished in 2:16:01, followed by Reuben Kiprop Kerio at 2:17:32.

On the women’s front, Cynthia Limo, in her debut marathon, exhibited astute racecraft by timing her acceleration perfectly. Her strategic surge after the 35-K mark secured her a comfortable lead, ultimately claiming victory in 2:33:01, establishing a gap of more than two minutes from her closest competitor, Sintayehu Tilahun Getahun.

Both Lonyangata and Limo attributed their triumphs to the unyielding encouragement of spectators lining the course and the camaraderie among fellow runners. This year’s event witnessed a notable increase in participation, with 15,594 starters, highlighting the escalating enthusiasm for this demanding yet rewarding sport.

Simultaneously, the companion Start to Park 10-K attracted 6,976 participants, showcasing a vibrant display of athleticism. Among the notable participants was Olympic bronze medalist Molly Seidel, who completed the race in an impressive 32:25, relishing the unique atmosphere of marathon running in preparation for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon.
