Melbourne, Australia; 4 March 2026 – Featuring one of the hottest names in global athletics, an unapologetic defending champion and a new challenger faster than them both – the Peter Norman Memorial 200m at the 2026 Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne has all the makings of a classic.

Australian 200m record holder Gout Gout (QLD), defending champion Lachlan Kennedy (QLD) and sub-20 second man Benjamin Richardson (IRL) will assemble a cast fit for Hollywood, bringing box office athletics to Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium on March 28.

At 18-years-old, Gout is already a major drawcard at any athletics meet in the world. The Ipswich teenager first emerged with an iconic style and is now laying down the times to match – none faster than his national record of 20.02-seconds set in Ostrava last year.

Cruising to a casual 10.00 (+0.9) season opener to become the third fastest Australian man in history over 100m, Gout is poised to reach new speeds again this year, with the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne presenting the first opportunity to see him on the national stage in 2026.

“I’m super excited to be coming back to Melbourne for the Maurie Plant Meet. It was a great meet last year and an awesome vibe down on the track,” Gout said.

“I know it’s going to be same again this year. Lachie [Kennedy] ran great last year, so for sure I’m out for revenge!”

Kennedy was a surprise winner in the 2025 instalment of the Peter Norman Memorial 200m, taking down the fan-favourite Gout in 20.26-seconds to stun the crowd in the final race of the night.

The World Indoor silver medallist is known for his flying start and will run the race in stark contrast to the fast-finishing Gout, with Kennedy posting a season opener of 20.46 (+0.6) to win at the Hobart Track Classic – his first race since July.

“I’m looking forward to that crowd and the atmosphere, and obviously defending my title which I’m confident I’ll be able to do,” Kennedy said.

“My body feels great and I’m hoping to be at my best by Maurie!”

Despite two of Australia’s fastest ever men going head-to-head, former South African champion Richardson will arrive down under with every intention of spoiling the party, owning a world-class personal best of 19.99-seconds in the event and 9.86-second credentials over 100m.

The trio will combine to headline the Peter Norman Memorial 200m, an annual race named in honour of Olympic silver medallist and humanitarian Peter Norman, whose national record of 20.06-seconds stood for 56-years until it was eclipsed by Gout in 2024.

The 2026 Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne is the first of 12 World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meets for 2026, sitting just under the Diamond League in status. Oceania’s only Gold Level meet is supported by the Victorian Government through its Significant Sporting Events Program.

The 2025 Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne was sold out, attracting 10,000 fans to Lakeside Stadium.
