The Polish quartet of Karol Zalewski, Rafal Omelko, Lukasz Krawczuk, Jakub Krzewina broke the world indoor record* in the men’s 4x400m with a stunning finish to the final track event of the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018.
USA led for the first three legs with Fred Kerley, Michael Cherry and Aldrich Bailey covering the first 1200 metres in 2:16.33, putting them on course for a world record.
But USA’s anchor leg runner Vernon Norwood was unable to shake off the challenge from Poland’s Krzewina over the final two laps. As the pair entered the home straight, Krzewina kicked past Norwood to cross the finish line in 3:01.77.
USA’s runner-up time of 3:01.97 was also inside the previous world record of 3:02.13, set by a different US quartet at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Sopot 2014.
