Jump to it! Volunteer applications open tomorrow

Sunday 5 February 2017

Applications to volunteer for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) open from 9am (AEST) tomorrow, Monday 6 February 2017.

More than 15,000 volunteers are required and will play a crucial role in shaping the games experience for athletes, officials and spectators from 4 – 15 April 2018.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC, called upon Queenslanders from all walks of life to put their hand up and volunteer for the Games.

“Queensland has a proud tradition of volunteering and helping out,” Mr Beattie said.

“Week in week out, from dawn to dusk volunteer surf lifesavers patrol the Gold Coast beaches, thousands joined the mud army to clean up the 2011 Brisbane floods and volunteers help out to deliver major events like the Gold Coast Marathon.

“This is the chance for Queenslanders and especially Gold Coasters to get involved with the Games and really become ambassadors for this great State.

“From 9am tomorrow, you can jump to it and volunteer online for the experience of a lifetime.”

Volunteers will receive training and learn new skills as part of the process. Specialist training for GC2018 will be provided by TAFE Queensland at no cost to Games volunteers.

Volunteer Engagement Manager and dual International Rugby player, Mat Rogers, has been promoting the volunteer program across the Gold Coast and surrounds for the past six months.

“Tomorrow is a really exciting day for GC2018. I’ve been out and about visiting sporting and community groups to promote the program and the potential to play a part in shaping the Games has really resonated amongst the community,” Mr Rogers said.

“This is the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade and the largest event ever on the Gold Coast. I’m really looking forward to working with the volunteers, sharing their stories and the experience all the way through to Games time.”

Intensive care nurse, Amanda Malone, is one of thousands set to apply tomorrow morning.

“As a Gold Coast resident, I’m so excited about the Games being in my own backyard,” Ms Malone said.

“Having the opportunity to be involved through volunteering is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“This event will promote the Gold Coast to the world and I’d encourage everyone interested to put their hand up, get involved and help make history.”
