Eugene, Oregon; 25 May 2024 -  Australia has continued to assert itself as a middle distance nation, with Olympic finalist Jessica Hull shattering the national 1500m record to land on the Diamond League podium, while Commonwealth champion Oli Hoare returns to world class form with his first Paris 2024 qualifier at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

When Rose Davies shaved just over two seconds off Jess Hull’s Australian record for 5000 metres in running 14:41.65 in Tokyo last weekend (19 May), I was more surprised than I should have been.

In line with that is the notion that each National Olympic Committee has the right to be represented at each Olympic Games. Thus, the universality clauses. As expressed in the World Athletics explainer to the qualification system for Paris: “An NOC with no male or female qualified athlete or relay team will be allowed to enter their best ranked male athlete or best ranked female athlete”  . . . so far, so not so bad. But then, “in either the 100 metres, 800 metres or marathon.”

Melbourne, Australia; 16 May 2024 -  The Board of Athletics Australia is delighted to announce Simon Hollingsworth OLY as its new Chief Executive Officer.

It was a grand-slam style event as 1,900 participants mastered the trails at the Margaret River Ultra Marathon 80km and 42km races over the weekend on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2024 in south-west Western Australia.

Ed Goddard took out the Hoka Runaway Sydney Half Marathon in 1:05:43 ahead of Matt Smith and Matthew Cox. Abigail Nordberg won the Half Marathon in 1:14:35 ahead of Eloise Wellings and Lauren Reid.
