At 82 years old, Judith Som proves that age is no barrier to running, finishing the TCS New York City Marathon last weekend. Clocking in at eight hours, 39 minutes, and 39 seconds, Som earned the distinction of being the oldest woman to cross the finish line in this year’s event. This accomplishment adds another chapter to her long-running passion, as she has now completed the iconic marathon 21 times.

Som shared that finishing this grueling race brings her a profound sense of purpose. “After achieving something like this, it really makes you feel like you can tackle anything,” she told CNN.

Running Through the City She Loves

For Som, the NYC Marathon is more than a race—it’s a tribute to the city she calls home. Though there are races around the globe, she’s stayed loyal to New York. “It’s New York City, baby,” she said. “I’ve never run any other marathon. This is my home course.”

Her running journey started at 34, when friends at a local fitness club encouraged her to swap her cycling workouts for a treadmill. That suggestion sparked a passion that’s endured for nearly five decades. In 1982, she prepared to run her first NYC Marathon, but illness struck days before the race, sidelining her. Determined, she returned the following year and finished in just over four hours despite heavy rain.

Pushing Past Pain

This year’s marathon presented fresh challenges. Som hit a low point around mile 19 with intense hip pain, momentarily doubting she could continue. Yet, after stopping to chat with supportive spectators, she felt a sudden surge of energy and pressed on to the finish line with a close friend. Her resilience shines as a testament to her dedication to running.

Fueled by Community and Connection

Much of Som’s enthusiasm for running comes from the community she’s discovered along the way. As a member of Mercury Masters, a New York running club for women over 50, she appreciates the camaraderie of fellow runners and the encouragement of fans cheering along the route.

“There were signs all along the course this year that said, ‘Today, we’re all family,’” Som recalled, noting how much the support of others inspires her to keep coming back.

Running has also been a source of healing, especially after the loss of her husband. “Running has changed my life,” she said. “It’s the friendships, experiences, and confidence I’ve gained that mean the most.”

Advice for Aspiring Runners

Som encourages those inspired by her journey to start slow and increase distance gradually. “Maybe join a group or take a training class,” she suggested. “Build your endurance and listen to your body—if you’re hurt, don’t push through it.”

Despite vowing that this would be her last marathon, Som is already rethinking. Sharing a laugh with her friend, she hinted, “We’ll probably be back again.”

It wouldn’t be surprising if she circles November 2, 2025, on her calendar, ready to embrace her city once more.
