I checked the impression that 2021 has been a good year for Australian records by reviewing the pace of national record-breaking in recent years. The figures seem to confirm the impression: Eight athletes set a total of 14 Australian records in 2021, a higher figure for both number of record-breakers and number of records than for any of the previous three years.
Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei has won the women's London Marathon, beating home the world record holder, Brigid Kosgei.  Kosgei, was aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive London Marathon titles since Germany's Katrin Doerre in 1994, but she managed just fourth.

This year sees a very classy field. In the men's we have a number of the all-time fastest marathoners competing. Favourite for the race would be Birhanu Legese, who was second behind Kenenisa Bekele in his epic near world record in Berlin two years ago, where he ran 2.02.48. Part of the Jos Hermens stable of elite runners, he is very much a marathon specialist. He hasn't done much at major championship level, but has some very fast times under his belt and is consistent.
