With the Olympic Games in Paris drawing closer, Kenyan athlete Benson Kipruto is preparing to pay tribute to his late friend and world record holder, Kevin Kiptum. Kiptum, once a hopeful contender for the Games, tragically lost his life earlier this year in a devastating accident near Kaptagat.
Despite the sorrow of Kiptum’s passing, Kipruto finds strength in their shared memories, which will drive him forward as he seeks success in Paris. Reflecting on their camaraderie, Kipruto fondly recalls the excitement of the 2023 Chicago Marathon, where Kiptum’s remarkable performance left Kipruto just three minutes behind. “My run will be in honor of Kiptum. He wasn’t just a friend; we shared dreams and a passion for the Olympics,” Kipruto shared with Capital Sport.
As Kipruto prepares to represent Kenya for the first time, he feels a deep sense of pride and responsibility. “Competing for Kenya is a privilege. While I’m accustomed to city marathons, this will be my debut on the global stage for my country. My goal is clear: to make Kenya proud,” said Kipruto.

Teaming up with the esteemed Eliud Kipchoge, Kipruto sees an opportunity for collaboration and success. “Eliud is a running legend, and I’m honored to share the track with him. Our aim is simple: to excel together. We’ll rely on teamwork in the beginning and individual effort as we approach the finish line,” Kipruto explained.
Despite the pressure of the Olympics, Kipruto remains composed, drawing confidence from his past victories in marathons worldwide. With wins in Boston and Chicago and podium finishes in Toronto and Prague, Kipruto has proven himself on the global stage. “Every race is a new challenge, and I’m diligently preparing. While I may participate in a smaller race beforehand, my main focus is on Paris,” he added.
As Kipruto embarks on his Olympic journey, he carries with him the memory of his dear friend and the pride of representing Kenya. With determination and resolve, he is ready to take on the world’s best and make his mark in Paris.
