Dominic Lobalu’s story is one of incredible resilience, rising from the devastation of war in South Sudan to competing as a European 10,000m champion and an Olympic finalist. His journey proves that no matter the obstacles, perseverance and belief in one’s dreams can lead to extraordinary achievements.

At just nine years old, Lobalu lost both of his parents during the Second Sudanese Civil War, forcing him to flee with his sisters to a refugee camp in Kenya. Despite the harsh conditions, Lobalu discovered his passion for running when he participated in a 10km race barefoot at age 15. This moment changed his life when he caught the attention of Tegla Loroupe, a renowned long-distance runner and former world champion. Loroupe invited Lobalu to join her Peace Foundation, where he would later become part of the Athlete Refugee Team, a program created by World Athletics, the UNHCR, and the IOC to help refugee athletes compete internationally.

In 2019, after winning a 10km road race in Geneva, Lobalu made the life-changing decision to seek asylum in Switzerland. There, he met Markus Hagmann, a teacher and part-time athletics coach, who played a crucial role in helping Lobalu navigate his new life and pursue his athletic dreams. Under Hagmann’s guidance, Lobalu’s career flourished, earning him victories at the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League and a stellar performance at the 2024 European Championships, where he secured gold in the 10,000m and silver in the 5,000m.

Lobalu’s journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics wasn’t without hurdles. Despite being initially barred from representing the Refugee Olympic Team due to bureaucratic issues, he was eventually cleared by World Athletics to compete for Switzerland. His Olympic debut in Paris was a testament to his perseverance, even though he was involved in a fall during the 5,000m heat. After regaining his focus, Lobalu fought his way to the final, finishing just outside the medal spots in an extremely competitive race.
