The Solushin®, an Australian-developed, world-first treatment for shin splints by sports medicine startup Ossyx, has gained global recognition thanks to Men’s 100m sprint Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson, featured on Netflix’s hit show Sprint. The Australian company was approached by Kishane’s Jamaican Olympic sprint coach in early 2024, seeking a solution for one of the most challenging ailments faced by runners worldwide—shin splints.
“Widely described by runners as a frustrating injury that is difficult to treat, the Solushin® is clinically proven to help users return to pain-free running up to 75 days faster1 than traditional rest-and-ice methods and increases ankle range of motion by 23% in just one hour,” says Dr. William McNamara, a medical doctor and the Clinical Lead and Co-founder of Ossyx.
World Athletics reported that Kishane Thompson had previously been unable to fully showcase his talent due to factors such as shin splints, hamstring injuries, and the Covid-19 pandemic2. However, at this year’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he secured a silver medal in the men’s 100m sprint.
A world first treatment
Designed in Sydney, Australia, the Solushin® is the first medical device developed by the team at Ossyx. It is engineered to aid recovery and improve performance, focusing on reducing shin splint pain—a common ailment among runners and sprinters. Following an initial clinical trial at a leading sports medicine clinic in Sydney, the Solushin® has been used on over 1,300 legs and trusted by professional athletes and sports enthusiasts since its launch during Covid. The device treats shin splints using its patented Counter-Traction Technology™.
“Shin splints can affect all of us, from everyday runners to the world’s best. We are thrilled that our homegrown Aussie recovery technology, the Solushin®, played a role in Kishane’s Olympic journey,” says Ben, CEO and Co-founder of Ossyx. “Being featured on Sprint was an unexpected surprise, and our entire team is deeply grateful to Kishane and his coaches for ensuring we were highlighted.”
