World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe has called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to establish definitive policies regarding transgender athletes, stressing the importance of protecting the integrity of women’s sports. Coe, a two-time Olympic champion at 1500m, is among the candidates vying to succeed Thomas Bach as IOC president in 2025.
Coe’s comments follow Algeria’s Imane Khelif’s victory in women’s welterweight boxing at the Paris Games, a year after she was barred from the World Championships due to gender eligibility issues. Speaking with the BBC, Coe outlined the need for strong leadership from the IOC.
“The IOC requires a clear, comprehensive policy on this matter,” Coe stated. “The preservation of the female sports category is crucial and non-negotiable. Without it, we risk losing the very essence of women’s sports, a consequence I am unwilling to accept.”
Experience and Preparation in Sports Leadership
Coe’s extensive background includes leading the successful London 2012 Olympics and subsequently transforming World Athletics by implementing policies like a ban on transgender athletes in female categories. His creation of the Athletics Integrity Unit has enhanced the organization’s credibility in anti-doping efforts.
“This has been my life’s work,” Coe said. “I feel I’ve trained for this leadership role. While not the most challenging race I’ve faced, it is one for which I am best prepared.”
The next IOC president will be selected in March 2025 and assume office in June. If elected, Coe envisions a collaborative model, empowering athletes, National Olympic Committees, and partners to play an active role in shaping the organization’s future.
Building Bridges Ahead of Los Angeles 2028
Coe acknowledges the geopolitical challenges the IOC may face, particularly amid tensions between the U.S. and China concerning doping. Additionally, he stresses the importance of diplomacy and fostering relationships with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as the Games approach in Los Angeles in 2028.
“I’ve dealt with international politics for over two decades,” Coe noted. “Any U.S. president would likely seek a Games that serves as a celebration of both national pride and global unity.”
