Olympic medallists Letsile Tebogo, Kishane Thompson, and Fred Kerley are set to compete in a high-profile men’s 100m race at the Wanda Diamond League event in Rome on August 30th.
Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who clinched gold in the 200m at the Paris Olympics, will be seeking his first 100m Diamond League win of the season at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala, taking place in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.
Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who narrowly missed out on gold and took silver in the 100m in Paris, is also a strong contender. Thompson, making his debut appearance of the 2024 Diamond League season, will be aiming for his first victory in the series.
Fred Kerley, who won bronze in the 100m at the Paris Olympics, will join them in the starting blocks, along with Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, the 2021 Tokyo Olympic champion. Competing in front of a home crowd, Jacobs is expected to have strong local support.
Also in the field is reigning Diamond League champion Christian Coleman, who is determined to bounce back from his Olympic disappointment by aiming for his third Diamond League win of the year. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake, and Japan’s Abdul Hakam Sani Brown are among the other world-class athletes completing the lineup.
The Wanda Diamond League stands as the foremost series of one-day athletics events, featuring 15 of the sport’s most prestigious competitions. Athletes earn points at each of the 14 series meetings to qualify for the Wanda Diamond League Final, which is set to take place in Brussels on September 13th and 14th.
With such a competitive field, the upcoming meet in Rome is poised to deliver an exciting showcase of speed and athletic prowess.
