Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui outpace competition to claim their first NYC Marathon titles
Race Highlights
Abdi Nageeye from the Netherlands and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui each claimed their first New York City Marathon titles on Sunday with impressive late-race moves, pulling ahead of the competition in the final stretch.
Men’s Division Recap
Nageeye’s win in the men’s race came after a strategic move in the final miles, where he broke away from 2022 champion Evans Chebet as they approached Central Park. Nageeye finished in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 39 seconds, with Chebet just six seconds behind.
“At the end, I was in disbelief—had I really won New York?” Nageeye reflected on his victory.
Having run the NYC Marathon three times before, with a third-place finish last year, Nageeye credited his familiarity with the course and a carefully planned strategy: “I paced myself to get through the first 36 kilometers, knowing the real race would start after that.”
Women’s Division Recap
In the women’s race, Sheila Chepkirui made an impressive debut, claiming victory over last year’s champion Hellen Obiri in the closing moments. Chepkirui crossed the line in 2:24:35, with Obiri following 15 seconds behind.
“Winning today shows how well my training has prepared me,” Chepkirui remarked.
The Kenyan women dominated the podium, with Vivian Cheruiyot rounding out the top three.
Wheelchair Division Upsets
The day began with an unexpected finish in the men’s wheelchair race as Daniel Romanchuk ended Marcel Hug’s three-year winning streak to capture his third New York title after previous wins in 2018 and 2019.
In the women’s wheelchair division, Susannah Scaroni took her second New York title, following her 2022 victory, making this the first year Americans swept both wheelchair events.
Course and Conditions
The 26.2-mile course led runners through New York’s five boroughs, starting on Staten Island and concluding in Central Park. This year’s race marked the 48th running of the marathon across the entire city, a tradition since 1976.
Over 50,000 runners were expected to participate in the iconic event, which began in ideal conditions with a starting temperature in the low 40s, cooler than last year’s warmer start at 61 degrees.
