Australian teenager, Cameron Myers, has broken the world U20 Indoor Mile World Record in New York. Myers, a prodigious talent, coached by the well-known Dick Telford, clocked 3:53.12, lowering the old mark that had been held by German Fernandez since 2009 of 3:55.02.
Racing at the Dr Sander Scorcher meet, Myers was first across the line setting a new meet record.
Speaking post-race:
“It’s good to come out here and get it done, but the goal was to run a bit faster so in reality I’m not too happy with that,” Myers said.
“So I’ve got to learn how to get out a bit harder.”
Running in his first indoor race, the short track set-up was a bit different, but obviously he seemed to cope:
“It was different, that’s for sure. The first couple of laps I was just getting used to it. So I think I’ll be ready in two weeks’ time.” Myers is down to race the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, February 3, a meet that usually boasts stacked fields and fast times. His main goal of the year is to qualify for the Track and Field World Championships, held in Tokyo this coming September. It would be his first senior major championships team, after he was overlooked for selection to the Paris Olympic 1500m. Australia had four men (Adam Spencer, Stewart McSweyn, Oliver Hoare and Myers) who all probably deserved a crack in Paris; it was a hard call for the selectors. At 18, Myers’ chance will come.
