Olympic 800m gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson has announced that she will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 athletics season because of an injury. The 22-year-old British runner had planned to compete in the Diamond League finals in Brussels next month but will now focus on her recovery.
Hodgkinson has been unstoppable this year, winning all nine of her 800m races, including a triumphant performance at the Paris Olympics earlier this month where she claimed the gold medal.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Hodgkinson expressed her disappointment but remained positive. “No more races for me,” she wrote. “I picked up a small injury, but we accomplished everything I hoped for this year. Thank you for all the love and support. See you on the track next year.”
Hodgkinson’s 2024 season has been filled with notable achievements. She successfully defended her European 800m title and set a new British record with a time of 1:54.61 at the London Diamond League in July.
Looking ahead, Hodgkinson has ambitious goals for 2025, including an attempt to break the women’s 800m world record, which has stood at 1:53.28 for over 40 years. She also aims to capture her first World Championship title in Tokyo next September, having finished with silver medals in the previous two years.
Despite this setback, Hodgkinson remains focused on her long-term goals and is determined to return stronger next year.
