The World Athletics U20 Championships are set to showcase the talents of the world’s most promising junior track and field athletes in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to 31. This event will feature some athletes who have already made a name for themselves at the senior level, including participants from the recent Paris 2024 Olympics.

For the first time, Peru will play host to a World Athletics Series event. The competitions will be held at Lima’s Estadio Atlético de la Villa Deportiva Nacional. The stadium, which can accommodate up to 6,800 spectators, is no stranger to major events, having also hosted the athletics competitions during the 2019 Pan American Games. During that event, temporary seating boosted the stadium’s capacity to 12,000.

Athletes to Keep an Eye On

This year’s championships will see 1,720 athletes from 134 countries, competing across 45 different events. Among them are several Olympians from Paris 2024, such as Thailand’s Puripol Boonson, a standout in the men’s 100m and 200m sprints. Australian sprinter Torrie Lewis, known for her surprise victory over Sha’Carri Richardson in the Xiamen Diamond League 200m, is another notable competitor.

South African sprinter Bradley Nkoana, who earned an Olympic silver medal in the 4x100m relay, will also be making his debut at the World U20 Championships. His compatriot, Bayanda Walaza, is expected to compete as well. Returning champions from the 2022 event in Cali include Karmen Bruus of Estonia (women’s high jump), Sharifa Davronova of Uzbekistan (women’s triple jump), Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa (women’s 5000m), and Kerrica Hill of Jamaica (women’s 100m hurdles).
