Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge will race the Sydney Marathon on August 31, marking his first-ever run in Oceania. The two-time Olympic champion and second-fastest marathoner in history sees this as an opportunity to promote marathon running globally. Race organizers hailed his participation as “a dream come true,” as Sydney debuts as a World Marathon Major.

Kipchoge, who famously broke the two-hour barrier in a controlled race, is aiming to reaffirm his dominance after a tough 2024, where he finished 10th in Tokyo and dropped out in Paris while chasing a historic third Olympic gold. Before Sydney, he will first attempt to bounce back at the London Marathon on April 27.

With 16 wins in 21 official marathons, including a stunning 10-race streak between 2014 and 2019, Kipchoge remains a giant of the sport. His presence will bring unprecedented global attention to the Sydney event, boosting its prestige on the world stage.

Beyond racing, Kipchoge is eager to embrace Australia’s culture and landscape. “I especially want to see kangaroos,” he said, ensuring his visit won’t just be about running, but also about experiencing the country firsthand.
