At Sound Running’s The TEN on Saturday, University of New Mexico’s Ishmael Kipkurui made history by setting a new NCAA record in the 10,000m, clocking an impressive time of 26:50.21. This performance surpasses the previous NCAA record of 26:52.72, which was set by Northern Arizona’s Nico Young at the same event in 2024.

Kipkurui was not the only standout performer from the University of New Mexico. His teammate, Habtom Samuel, last year’s NCAA outdoor 10,000m champion, also delivered an exceptional performance, finishing in 26:51.06. Samuel’s time was also under Young’s previous record, securing him second place in the race.

Kipkurui’s record-breaking run reinforces the University of New Mexico’s presence as a powerhouse in NCAA distance running. His performance, along with Samuel’s, highlights the depth and talent within the program, setting the stage for a highly competitive outdoor track season ahead.
