Trail running enthusiasts around the world had their eyes glued to social media feeds on Tuesday morning as the Barkley Marathons got underway at Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee. The annual event, organized by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, is known as the quirkiest race in the world of trail running, with about 40 runners embarking on a grueling challenge that involves completing five 20- to 25-mile loops with about 12,000 feet of climbing. However, the race is much more than that. Runners must also navigate steep hills, brambles, and slippery terrain while battling often cold and wet conditions.
American Olympic champion Dick Fosbury, who revolutionized the high jump with a technique known as the Fosbury Flop, has passed away at the age of 76. Ray Schulte, his former agent, announced the news on Monday via Instagram. According to Schulte, Fosbury passed away peacefully in his sleep after a short battle with lymphoma recurrence.
Senbere Teferi, the 5k world record holder, is among a group of African runners who form a strong women’s elite field at the Vienna City Marathon. Austria’s major road running event will be staged for the 40th time and it could well be the women who produce the headlines at the jubilee edition on 23rd April. The current course record of 2:20:59 will be a target if weather conditions are suitable on the day. Organisers of the Vienna City Marathon, which is the only World Athletics Elite Label Road Race in Austria, expect to register around 35,000 entries for their event. Rīga, Latvia - Sebastian Coe, a renowned Olympic champion, ran a mile from the Latvian National Art Museum to the Freedom Monument on March 9th as part of a promotional drive for the World Road Running Championships scheduled to take place in Rīga later this year. Coe expressed his excitement about the event, stating that Rīga would make history in world athletics by hosting the World Road Running Championships. He declared that the city would become the road running capital of the world and encouraged everyone to participate in the championships. Unlike other tournaments that are exclusively reserved for elite athletes, Coe emphasized that the event is open to all participants.
