It’s early in an Olympic year. An unknown young man breaks through at 800, running 1:45.77. A scarcely better-known young woman breaks the national record in the 100 metres, speeding down the straightaway in 11.10 seconds.
A column by Len Johnson Few runners kept up with Emil Zatopek during his brilliant career. Even fewer got past the Czechoslovakian champion. And of those who did, hardly any stayed ahead of ‘Zato’ all the way to the line. If it was hard enough catching up with Zatopek through his...
Runners Tribe: 4 key workouts - Josh Harris Event: Marathon - PB 2:17:08 Otsu (JPN) 05.03.2017 When building up to a Marathon I like to complete a significant amount of time at around Marathon pace, as I've struggled when I've primarily stuck to doing short, higher quality workouts. In the past 5 years, I had never considered the mental side of sport. For me, I had only considered that if you taper, you’ll be fresh and if you’re fresh, you’ll run well. This seemed to work for my 3 years as an undergraduate at university, where I...
This week, the IAAF will ratify changes to the Diamond League. These changes have the goal of creating a more spectator-friendly format that can allow fans to better engage with and support the sport. That’s a worthy goal. I am fortunate to have attended many of the Diamond League meets, experiencing them both in person and on TV. The reality is Diamond League meets are long and slow, often held in half-filled stadiums that lack consistent energy. That’s why it’s particularly sad that the Bauhaus Galan meet in Stockholm lost its Diamond League status.
